Jai Prakash (JP) Vishwavidyalaya, Jai Prakash University
Named after famous freedom fighter Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, Jai Prakash Vishwavidyala or University was established on 22nd November 1990 in Chapra district of Bihar. It is one of the premier universities of the state fulfilling the need of higher studies and quality education to the people of Saran commissionary. The territorial jurisdiction of the university is now stretched over the whole Saran Division and is now comprises three districts of Chapra, Siwan and Gopalganj and thus colleges situated in these districts were automatically come under this university.
The University has 21 constituent colleges, 11 affiliated colleges and 23 proposed colleges including 10 professional colleges offering courses for both under graduate level to post graduate level making it one of the largest universities of Bihar. The university is recognized by the UGC as a state university and is a member of Association of Indian universities. There are altogether 17 P.G Departments imparting quality education in the field of higher education to the students to the backward region of Bihar into practical reality and help them to get higher education and showing their worth.
The students belong to backward classes and under privileged communities are also encouraged to achieve higher education through various distance learning programs offered by the university. The 242 acres of sprawling land on the eastern side of Chapra town is now developing into the campus of university according to the master plan prepared by internationally acclaimed town planners.
