During the year 1956, the Government of India set up the National Council of Training in Vocational Trades (NCTVT). Later on, the NCTVT was renamed to become the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). The NCVT has the dual responsibility of framing the course guidelines and advising the Union Government of India. The NCVT advises the Government of India on how to conduct the All India Trade Test. Along with that, the NCVT lays down instructions on the conferring of the National Trade Certificates (NTCs) to the students after successful completion of the trade programs.

Industrial Training Institutes (ITI)

As part of the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS), the Union Government of India (under the Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGE&T) and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship) constituted around 50 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country. There are several vocational trades for which skill training are given to the aspirants for catering to the growing manpower needs of industries.

Apprenticeship training is included in the vocational training courses. After completing the training, the candidates have to pass the All India Trade Test (AITT), following which they are given the National Trade Certificate.

There are varied engineering and non-engineering trades, which includes around 130 specialties. As per their interests, aspirants can enrol in the various vocational training programs. The duration of the training ranges from 6 months to 2 years.
