The National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) is a counseling body that was instituted by the Government of India during the year 1956. The council is responsible for devising the syllabus for the craftsmen training, framing the policies, carrying out the All India Trade Tests, and conferring the National Trade Certificates to the successful candidates. With the NCVT’s headquarters in New Delhi, the main objective of the council is to function as a central agency and counsel the Government of India on formulating the training policies and conducting vocational training throughout India.

Primarily, the NCVT imparts vocational training to: the students after leaving schools; workers; ITI graduates with degrees; diploma holders of engineering and non-engineering courses. By doing so, they can enhance their employment prospects through the optimal utilization of the existing infrastructure in Government, private agencies as well as the industrial sector. Both nationally and internationally, the NCVT certifications are given due recognition.

The Industrial Training Institute (ITI) courses are affiliated with NCVT. As part of the ITI programs, a series of engineering and non-engineering trades are included. Under the engineering trades are included machinist, plumber, carpenter, electrician, and draughtsman (civil / mechanical), machinist grinder –to name a few. The non-engineering trades are inclusive of stenography, cutting & sewing, and data entry operations – amongst others.

Both public and private ITI centers are functional. However, the admission processes of the government-run centers are conducted by NCVT. As per the NCVT guidelines, the ITI admissions are merit-based or as per entrance examination.

The ITI courses come under the Craftsmen Training scheme that was established by the Directorate General of Training (DGT) during the year 1950. The duration of the courses vary, and are in the range of 6 months to 2 years. There are around 130 specializations for the aspirants to choose from.

To be eligible, the applicants need to pass their 8th, 10th or 12th standard exams, as per the desired course. Also, the ITI programs are inclusive of 1–year Apprenticeship training, following which the candidates can give the All India Trade Test. Then, the successful candidates get the National Trade Certificate (NTC).

The privately-owned ITI centers have their own rules of admission.
