Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) is the primary and principal universities of the state in providing human resource, skills and technology which is used for the sustainable development of agriculture. It is situated in Vellanikkara Thrissur and become operational since 1st February 1971 with two educational and 21 research institutions administered by the Departments of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry by the Government of Kerala under its umbrella. During 2011, the Agricultural University of Kerala was Trifurcated into Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) and Kerala Agricultural University (KAU).

At present, it has six colleges, three Agriculture, one Agricultural Engineering, one Forestry, One Co-operation Banking and Management, 06 RARSs, 07 KVKs, 15 Research Stations and 16 Research and Extension Units under the faculties of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Forestry. The university also offers M.Sc. (integrated) on climate change adaption and a diploma in Agricultural Sciences as well. The university offers Diploma, Bachelor degrees, Master degrees, Bachelor-Master Integrated Degree, Doctoral Degree programs to the students.

Admission to various undergraduate courses of the university is on the basis of ranks obtained in the common entrance examination conducted by the Commissionarate of Entrance Examination, Government of Kerala.
