Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya or Mahatma Gandhi International University was established to fulfill the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. He had a dream that Hindi should not only be the national language of the country but it should gain the status of a world language. The University came into existence through an Act passed by the Indian Parliament in 1997 and has given the special and unique responsibility to enrich Hindi language and literature. Spreading across the area of around two hundred the university is functioning as a residential university solely dedicated to the cause of Hindi. The university is accredited with “A “grade by NAAC and has three keywords which are integrally woven in the philosophy guiding the functioning of the institution.

The university has initiated academic programs in the areas which are important in Gandhi’s socio-political agenda such as non-violence, peace and conflict resolution. The University has also undertaken an ambitious project to publish an Encyclopaedia of social sciences in Hindi. It is also coordinating international efforts in the areas like syllabus de elopement, content creation and audio-visual aids to the students who study Hindi as a foreign language.

The university offers various diplomas, graduate, post graduate, M.Phill and Ph.D programs where students can enrol themselves. There are eight schools in the university besides this the Distance Education Program of the University is actively involved in spreading the education in all area of the country. Apart from this three centers namely Baba Saheb Ambedkar Center for Dalit and Tribal Studies, Mahatma Gandhi Fuji Guruji Center for Ahimsa and Peace Studies and Bhadant Anand Kaushalyayan Center for Buddhist Studies have been also established.
