The University of Mumbai which is earlier known as University of Bombay is one of the oldest and premier universities of India which was established in 1857. It was amongst the first three universities established in India. The university was accorded 5 star status in 2001 and “A” Grade in April 2012 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It has been granted University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) status by UGC and PURSE scheme by DST. The University of Mumbai is one of the largest universities in the world with a record number of students 5, 49, 432 was enrolled in the year 2011. At present the university has 711 affiliated colleges.

The University of Mumbai offers Bachelor, Master, Doctoral, diploma and certificate courses in many disciplines. The language of instruction for most of these courses is English. It has three campuses across the city at Kalina Campus, Thane Sub Campus and Fort Campus. The university also offers Distance and Open learning and thus offer various correspondence courses as well to impart education to the learners. The Mumbai University has a virtual classroom at its Kalina Campus and thus became the first university in the country to introduce this kind of facility. This facility is used to deliver lectures, workshops and seminars through virtual learning system.
