Sampurnanand Sanskrit University is India’s oldest University which is still in functional till date. This institute of higher learning of Sanskrit language is established in 1791 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This University is specialist in the study of Sanskrit and its related fields. The former name of this University was Government Sanskrit College.

In 1857 this University started post-graduation courses and in 1880 an examination system was started. This University is famous for having the pride of its institution – Saraswati Bhawan Granthalaya which was established in 1894. This University library has carefully stored thousands of precious ancient Sanskrit manuscripts which are carefully preserved. These manuscripts are edited and published in book form. More than 400 books have been published in a series known as “Sarasvati Bhawana”.

This UGC affiliated Sanskrit University provides affiliation to more than 1200 Sanskrit-medium schools and colleges. This is the ultimate Indian University which provides such widespread affiliation throughout the country. In Uttar Pradesh alone there are 963 affiliated colleges. Sampurnanand Sanskrit University also provides affiliation to the Sanskrit colleges located in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim. In this Public University the Sanskrit studies are divided into the departments of Veda, Vyakarna, Jyotish, Dharmashastra, Sahitya, Puranetihas, Prachin Rajshastra-Arthashastra, Vedanta, Sankhyayogtantram, Comparative Religion and Philosophy, Nyaya, Mimansa, Modern Language and Linguistics and Ayurveda.
