Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education was established in the year 1910 under the Department of Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. The board offers the following schemes of education which include SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) Stream, the Anglo-Indian Stream, the Oriental School Leaving Certificate Stream and Matriculation Stream. For both classes 11th and 12th there is a Higher Secondary stream.

The board conducts two examination one in class Xth and the other in class XIIth. Class 12th score is generally considered by the universities for admission into various higher level education programs. Schools in the state can choose the affiliation to the Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary education or with the CBSE or ICSE Boards that are authorized to conduct board exams in both 10th and 12th and can award the certificates to successful candidates.

Generally the board conduct examinations for both the classes and the exams are held in the month of March/April and the results will be declared in the month of May.
