The state of Tamil Nadu is among the most literate states of the country with 80.33% literacy rate. It has 37 universities, 552 engineering colleges, 1150 arts colleges. The higher education in the state is under the control of Tamil Nadu Directorate of Technical Education (TNDTE) which deals with a diploma, degree, post graduate courses and research programs in the state. Out of 552 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, 7 of them are government/aided colleges, 20 autonomous colleges and rest of them are self-financing. The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore, College of Engineering Anna University, Chennai, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli are few among many premier institutes of the state.

For taking admission to various engineering courses aspirants need to clear Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) examination conducted by Anna University every year for admission to undergraduate level engineering courses at various engineering colleges of the state. Admission to over 2 lakh engineering courses is based on the TNEA rank list after which students need to attend counselling which is offline and students need to be physically present for it. The state of Tamil Nadu offers admission to eligible applicants in around 563 engineering institutes of the state.
