Horticulture and Forestry are the two major sectors in Uttarakhand, which have great potential for sustainable growth in the economy since the State’s forest cover is 65% in terms of its geographical area. Moreover, there are countless reasons for the growth of agriculture in the hills of this hilly Indian state. The Government of Uttarakhand has determined to develop horticulture and forestry through scientific interventions by establishing Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Uttarakhand University of Horticulture & Forestry on 28 April 2011 at Bharsar, Pauri Garhwal, and also another campus at Ranichauri. This University is recognized by the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

This seat of higher learning in Horticulture and Forestry holds its area jurisdiction in almost the whole of Uttarakhand. The University offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in various courses which are headed by the faculties of Vegetable Science, Fruit Science, Floriculture & Landscape Architecture, Spices and Plantation crops, Medicinal & Aromatic Plants, Food Science & Technology, Natural Resource Management, Crop Improvement, Basic Sciences and Humanities, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, Agricultural Economics, Entomology and Plant Pathology. This University is also involved in various research programmes with ICAR and also closely works in partnerships with State extension departments and NGOs for transfer of technology, providing training to farmers and also offers demonstration of modern farming techniques at farmers’ field which are mainly conducted and organized through Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) situated in the campus, Kisan Mela, Kisan Diwas, Exhibitions, Seminars etc from time to time.
