At Vellore in Tamil Nadu, the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), previously known as Vellore Engineering College, is based. Until the year 2000, the center was affiliated to the Madras University. Then, in the year 2001, the Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India, granted the center with deemed status. In the year 2006, the institute was rechristened as ‘VIT University’.

VIT is a privately-owned, co-educational, deemed university. During the year 1984, the institution was founded by G. Vishwanathan who was appointed as the Chancellor of the University. Also, the center was instituted under the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Union Government of India, New Delhi.

The college conducts undergraduate, postgraduate, and research courses. The University has several campuses, including at Chennai and Vellore in Tamil Nadu, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, and Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh’s new capital city, Amaravati, is found towards the Southern banks of the Krishna River, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. Also, VIT is the first academic institution to start operations in the state’s capital city. The newly-opened university has been named as VIT-AP.

The university has been given 200 acres of land that will be handed over in 2 phases. For the 1^st phase, VIT has paid 50 crore rupees towards the procurement of the first 100 acres. Part of the university has been built and subsequently, the rest of the institution is scheduled to be constructed. In July 2017, VIT-AP started their operations.

Currently, the aspirants can enroll at the institute for a number of B.Tech and M.Tech (Information Technology) courses after clearing their 12^th standard examinations. The future university plans include introducing research courses, including Ph.D. ones, as well.
