The University of Madras is informally known as Madras University and is regarded as the mother of all old Universities in South India. Established in 1857, it is regarded to be India’s one of the premium Universities located at the Chennai city. Since its establishment the University is growing and widening its teaching and research activities. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) have awarded “A” Grade upon this University and moreover the University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognized this seat of higher learning with “Potential for Excellence”. Moreover Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has also offered its membership over this University.

Apart from its main campus at Chennai, Madras University also has its other six campuses at Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal and Chetpet. Presently, there are 73 academic departments assembled under 18 schools, covering various areas of sciences, social sciences, humanities, management and medicine along with 109 affiliated colleges and 52 approved research institutions. Notable colleges and research institutions like Loyola College, Presidency College, Madras Christian College, Adyar Cancer Institute, Ramanujam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics and other innumerable lists of such academic and research institutes are affiliated by Madras University.
