MAT Exam – Preparation Tips

The Management Aptitude Test is held by the Centre for Management Services that is a unit of the All India Management Association (AIMA). The AIMA was constituted with the help of local management institutions, various industries, and India’s government, to promote the management profession in the country.

The MAT is conducted four times annually, during the months February, May, September, and December. Also, the candidates’ MAT exam scores are considered by several B-schools in India for admission to their management programs. Upon completion of management courses, the pupils can gain employment at management levels across industries.

The candidates who have completed their graduation from recognized educational boards are eligible to apply for the MAT exam. Also, the pupils who are awaiting their graduation results can apply.

MAT contains five papers, with objective-type questions, having multiple options. The different sections of the MAT exam include Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, and Indian & Global Environment.

MAT: Preparation Tips

  • Start your preparation as early as 6 months prior to the exam date. Prepare your study time table and allot time to each subject suitably.
  • For the Mathematics section, solve sample question papers to know about the different topics, required skills, and expected standards. Also, at first, you can apply the traditional methods to solve the problems and then, gradually, progress to using shortcuts to save on time.
  • To prepare for the Comprehension section, you must read varied articles and regularly. By doing so, you can develop precision and speed that are the two important skills to excel in this section. Also, before attempting this section, go through the passages and questions to become familiar with the critical areas.
  • Note that the Intelligence & Critical Reasoning and Data Analysis & Sufficiency are tricky. However, through regular practice you can become well-versed with the subjects and, accordingly, can plan your strategy on how to solve the various problems.
  • Keep in mind that the Indian and Global Environment section evaluates your general awareness. Now, to improve your general awareness, you should read magazines & newspapers, browse the Internet, and watch news channels. By doing so, you can remain updated about the current national and international affairs.
  • To improve your speed and accuracy, you must solve subject-wise papers and then, progress to entire model papers. More importantly, maintain the prescribed time limit for solving the given questions. Remember that both speed and accuracy are important and practice is key for improving your overall performance.
  • Consider enrolling in crash courses of reputed coaching institutes. They conduct practice tests and help you to get familiar with the exam format. Moreover, they have Group discussions that can build confidence while addressing a crowd.   • Practice time management as part of your MAT preparation. By solving mock tests and practice tests you can achieve this objective.
