Career After ME/MTech

ME/MTech graduates have several career options after course completion. Note that there is not much difference between ME and MTech degrees. In fact, they offer the same scope, opportunities, and value. Only, the degrees have different names.

This is because after India gained Independence, 2 types of universities were constituted. Some universities provide degrees in many fields such as Arts, Education, Engineering, and Sciences; and they named their engineering degrees as BE and ME. On the other hand, the Universities that were providing only Engineering degree courses, named their degrees as B.Tech and M.Tech ones.

Refer to the following details to know more about the varied opportunities after completion of ME/M.Tech courses.

  • Pursuing research degrees – such as the PhD ones
  • Opting for jobs
  • Becoming a teacher in engineering colleges
  • Establishing a company

PhD Degree post M.Tech Course

Those aspirants who are interested in building a career as teachers, or researchers, can opt for PhD studies, after obtaining the M.Tech degree. Then, as researchers, they can work in the Research & Development department of companies. Moreover, the course graduates can choose careers in teaching that are both challenging and lucrative.

All the same, there are several R&D organizations and Central Universities for pursuing higher education in India. These include the public institutes such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs).

Job Opportunities

After completing your B.Tech or M.Tech studies, you can search for jobs in the related fields. As such, the M.Tech degree qualifies you for higher salary packages and greater responsibilities. Also, you become equipped to streamline the varied processes and improve the quality of production.

Further, armed with the M.Tech degrees, you can avail jobs in manufacturing, R&D, and Information Technology companies. More so, you can work in various roles such as Senior Engineers, Research Associate, and Project Manager.

Teaching Profession

In today’s times, India’s educational sector is growing at a rapid rate. Thus, there is a rise in demand for teachers and professors at the various educational institutions – such as Colleges and Universities. Also, many M.Tech graduates are becoming part of the academic fraternity, owing to the wide scope that the teaching profession offers.

Nonetheless, to become a teacher, you must hone your presentation and communication skills. Additionally, you must learn to be patient enough to deal with the pupils. Besides, you must inculcate the habit of reading to remain updated on current affairs.

Starting an Enterprise

There is, also, the option of starting your entrepreneurial enterprise after obtaining the M.Tech degree. Fortunately, you can avail funding and investments from venture capitalists on the basis of your M.Tech. degree. However, you must make the right decisions if you want your business to be a success.

PhD Specializations

As part of your PhD course, there are various specializations for availing. Though, you must keep in mind that your area of specialization during the M.Tech courses decides the ones of the PhD programs.

For example, if you have chosen Mechanical Engineering (ME) as your area of specialization when pursuing the M.Tech course, your area of specialization during the PhD course will be related to ME. However, the decisions of the area of research are taken by the Institute’s respective departments, depending on the student’s knowledge, skills, and aptitude.

Even so, nowadays, the Engineering institutes are adopting an inter-disciplinary approach, whereby, the pupils can avail the option of 2 PhD specializations.

Fellowships

For M.Tech graduates who want to pursue PhD programs, they can avail fellowships that are within the range of 19000-24000 rupees per month. The duration of these grants is 3 years, but can be extended if required. Some renowned engineering institutes – such as the IITs, NITs, and IISC in Bangalore – provide funding to the PhD aspirants.

Scholarships

PhD students are given scholarships by CSIR, AICTE, UGC, the Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Information Technology. Further, there are other scholarship schemes for women scientists that are available.

Moreover, companies – like Microsoft and Shell – are offering scholarships to pupils who are specializing in industry-related issues. There are, also, private companies who are investing to promote R&D projects in the country.

Choosing an Institution to Pursue the PhD program

If you are looking to pursue the PhD courses in India, note the following points.

  •     Prior to selecting an institution, the aspirant should study the various infrastructural facilities that are offered; these include library, laboratories, and other services.
  •     Your guide should be chosen in accordance with your area of specialization.
  •     Make sure to complete your research work for the entire term of the PhD course.

Pursuing PhD in International Universities

A considerable percentage of pupils look to pursue their PhDs in foreign universities to enhance their career prospects. However, the students have to qualify for the GRE and TOEFL examinations to get admissions in the PhD courses of International Universities. Based on your scores, you can get admissions in the aforesaid universities. Some reputed Universities that offer PhD programs include Berkeley, Wisconsin, Pittsburg, and Stanford.

Also, many students prefer countries such as Australia and Germany to pursue the PhD courses.

Furthermore, if you are opting for the PhD programs from foreign universities, be sure to check the institution’s credibility.
