by Established in the year 1995 and based in Gangtok in Sikkim in India, the Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) is the very-first government-private institution in the district. Also, in India, the institute is the first Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative for healthcare and higher education services.
Previously, SMU was named as the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences. However, in the year 2010, the institution came to be known as SMU. The institute has 2 campuses: the medical campus and the technology campus.
As part of the center’s offerings, the people around the North and North-eastern regions of India can avail affordable healthcare and educational services.
There are several managing bodies of SMU including the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Indian Association of Physiotherapy, University Grants Commission (UGC), the Distance Education Council, the Medical Council of India (MCI). Also, the center has membership of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Moreover, the offered courses at SMU have received ISO:9001 accreditation.
The aspirants can enroll for a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are held at SMU. The varied SMU colleges are School of Basic & Applied Sciences, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, Department of Hospital Administration, Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, and Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy.
Furthermore, during the year 2016, the educational center was granted permission by the UGC to conduct courses (in disciplines such as Management and Information Technology) through the Open & Distance Learning system.
